What Is hCG? The Hormone Behind Every Positive Test

Every line, word and beta in the testing world reports one molecule. Meet it properly.

What hCG is and who makes it

Human chorionic gonadotropin is a glycoprotein hormone produced by trophoblast cells — the embryo's outer layer that becomes the placenta. Production begins as implantation starts, which is why no test on earth can see a pregnancy before then. Structurally it's two subunits: an alpha shared with LH, FSH and TSH, and a beta unique to hCG — the part tests are built to recognize and the reason LH doesn't fake positives.

What it actually does

hCG's job is rescuing the corpus luteum — the temporary ovarian gland left behind by ovulation, which produces the progesterone that maintains the uterine lining. Without pregnancy, the corpus luteum retires after ~12–14 days and the period arrives. hCG is the embryo's message: keep going. Sustained progesterone = sustained lining = no period — which is why the missed period and the positive test are the same fact in two languages. (Around weeks 8–10 the placenta takes over progesterone production and hCG's peak passes.)

The life curve

From near-zero at implantation: doubling every ~48 hours through the early weeks, crossing test thresholds within days, peaking around weeks 8–12 (often 25,000–290,000 mIU/ml — the hook effect's home turf), then declining to a plateau for the rest of pregnancy. • After any pregnancy ends — clearance takes days to weeks.

• Men have a baseline near zero — which is why a positive test in a man is a medical finding, not a joke.

Why one molecule carries the whole show
