Pregnancy Test Sensitivity: What 10, 20 and 25 mIU/ml Actually Mean
The single number that decides how early a test can turn positive — where to find it, how brands differ, and why a "less sensitive" test isn't a worse test after your missed period.

Every pregnancy test has one number that matters more than its brand, price or packaging: its sensitivity threshold — the lowest urine hCG concentration it reliably flags, written in mIU/ml (milli-international units per milliliter). It's usually in the leaflet's fine print.
What the number does
Think of it as the height of the bar hCG must clear:
- 10 mIU/ml — very sensitive; the "early detection" class. Can catch pregnancies 2–3 days earlier than standard tests.
- 20–25 mIU/ml — the standard class; most midstream tests and most digitals live here.
- 50+ mIU/ml — some older or bargain tests; fine after a missed period, useless for early testing.
Because hCG roughly doubles every 48 hours early on, the gap between a 10 and a 25 is about one to one-and-a-half days of biology: a pregnancy crossing 10 mIU/ml on Tuesday crosses 25 by Wednesday night. That's the entire early-testing arms race — about 36 hours.
Sensitivity is a floor, not a grade
A 25 mIU test isn't "worse." At 15 DPO, when hCG is typically in the hundreds, both classes print equally bold lines. Sensitivity only matters in the 8–12 DPO window where levels are still crawling past those thresholds. After your missed period, buy whatever's cheap.
Reading the fine print like a lab tech
- The threshold is where the test detects hCG reliably (usually ≥99% in lab conditions) — fainter responses below threshold happen, which is one source of ambiguous ghost lines.
- Two tests with the same number can differ in dye strength and readability — hence brand folklore. Our brand sensitivity roundup compares the usual suspects.
- Concentration multiplies with the threshold. A 10 mIU test with afternoon water-dumped urine behaves like a 25 with first-morning urine. Hold time is part of the instrument — see how long to hold.
Matching test to mission
- 8–11 DPO scouting: 10 mIU pink-dye strips.
- 12–14 DPO confirmation: anything 20–25 mIU.
- Post-missed-period reassurance: any reputable test, or a digital for word-based certainty.
- Post-loss or post-trigger tracking: cheap sensitive strips in quantity — you'll use several; context in testing out a trigger and hCG after a loss.
Whatever the threshold, a faint early line still needs a fair read: photograph it inside the window and let the AI Pregnancy Test Checker make the call before your hopes do.
The bottom line
mIU/ml is the whole game before your missed period and irrelevant after it. Sensitive strips + morning urine for the early days; any honest test once you're late.
