Odoo 19 Today, Odoo 20 This Autumn: When and How to Upgrade

Odoo ships a major version every autumn and supports roughly the last three. In August 2026 that means Odoo 19 is the current release, Odoo 20 is expected around October after Odoo Experience in Brussels (24–26 September), and companies still on Odoo 16 or older are at or past the end of official support. If you have been putting off an upgrade, the next few months are the moment to plan it — either straight to 19 now, or to 20 once it settles.

Here is what changed, what it means for a customised system, and a plan that keeps the upgrade boring.

What Odoo 19 changed

Released in autumn 2025, Odoo 19 was the largest interface change in years and the first release where AI is a product feature rather than a bolt-on:

• AI across the apps — contextual assistance in CRM, Sales, Helpdesk, Accounting and Documents: drafting, summarising, categorising, suggesting next actions.
• A refreshed interface with better mobile layouts, richer dashboards and a reworked reporting system.
• Website and eCommerce rebuilt with new templates, design tools, a modern cart and a smoother checkout — relevant if your online store runs on Odoo.
• Sustainability and ESG reporting integrated into Accounting.
• Operational polish — faster activity scheduling, address autocompletion, and improvements across Inventory, Manufacturing and POS.

For companies in the Gulf, the localisation modules — Saudi Arabia's ZATCA e-invoicing, the UAE chart of accounts and taxes, Egypt's ETA integration — continue to be maintained on 19, which matters for the ZATCA waves and the UAE 2027 mandate.

What to expect from Odoo 20

Based on Odoo's roadmap communication and early previews, Odoo 20 pushes AI from assistance into task-level agents that can carry out work inside Accounting, Helpdesk, Website and Documents, alongside a reworked Payroll dashboard, POS hardware improvements and a mobile interface built for touch. As with every release, details are final only at launch; plan on general availability a few weeks after Odoo Experience.

Should you wait for 20? If you are on 17 or 18 and everything works, upgrading to 20 in early 2027 is reasonable. If you are on 16 or earlier, do not wait: move to 19 now and take 20 later. Skipping three or four versions turns an upgrade into a re-implementation.

The support clock

• Odoo 16 (2022) — end of standard support; security updates only, if any.
• Odoo 17 (2023) — supported until roughly the release of Odoo 20.
• Odoo 18 (2024) — supported until roughly autumn 2027.
• Odoo 19 (2025) — supported until roughly autumn 2028.

Odoo Online and Odoo.sh customers are moved forward on Odoo's schedule; self-hosted companies decide for themselves, which is how systems end up three versions behind.

How the upgrade works

Enterprise

Odoo's upgrade service takes a copy of your database, migrates the standard data to the target version and returns it. Your part is the custom layer: porting modules, adapting views and reports, and testing. Requests go through the upgrade platform; test upgrades are unlimited, so use them.

Community

There is no official service. The OpenUpgrade project provides migration scripts for standard modules, and your engineers run them version by version, then port custom modules. It works, but it is a project, and one of the strongest arguments for Enterprise in our Community vs Enterprise guide.

A plan that keeps it boring

1. Inventory the customisations. Every custom module, every Studio change, every third-party App Store module and its version-availability. Delete what no longer has a business reason.
2. Check third-party modules first. A module with no 19 version is a blocker; decide to replace, rebuild or drop it before anything else.
3. Request a test upgrade (Enterprise) or run OpenUpgrade in a staging copy (Community).

5. Re-test compliance flows — ZATCA clearance and reporting, UAE and Egypt e-invoicing, WPS files, bilingual layouts. Localisation modules change between versions.
6. Run a conference-room pilot on the upgraded staging database with real users and real data.
7. Cut over on a period end, with a data freeze and hypercare for the first weeks — the same discipline as a fresh implementation.

Typical effort: one to three weeks for a lightly customised company on Enterprise; six to twelve weeks for a heavily customised group or a Community system jumping two versions.
