From Wheat Seeds to AI: A Short History of the Pregnancy Test
Ancient grain experiments, the rabbit era, radioimmunoassay, the 1977 home kit that took two hours — and how we got to three-minute strips read by phone cameras.

The three-minute strip in your bathroom is the end of a 3,500-year engineering project. A brief tour — partly because it's a great story, partly because the history explains the design.
Antiquity: the germination test
Ancient Egyptian papyri describe urinating on wheat and barley: growth predicted pregnancy (barley a boy, wheat a girl, they claimed). Sex prediction: nonsense. But 20th-century researchers replicating it found pregnant urine really did promote germination substantially more often than not — pregnancy hormones (estrogens in that case) genuinely affect plants. Humanity's first urine biomarker assay, accidentally half-valid.
1920s–40s: the animal era
The discovery of hCG launched real bioassays: urine injected into mice, rats, rabbits — pregnancy diagnosed by effects on the animal's ovaries ("the rabbit died" entered slang, though the rabbits died either way, examination being terminal). The 1930s–60s upgrade was the Hogben test: injected African clawed frogs laid eggs within hours if hCG was present — reusable, faster, an actual clinical workhorse for decades.
1960s–70s: antibodies arrive
Immunoassays replaced animals: antibodies agglutinating (or not) in the presence of hCG on slides, then radioimmunoassay achieving real sensitivity. In 1977 the first US home kit shipped — a two-hour chemistry set with a mirror, vial and dropper, marketed amid real controversy about whether patients could be trusted with their own results. Early accuracy: good positives, dreadful false-negative rates by modern standards.
1988: lateral flow changes everything
The one-step lateral-flow immunoassay — the sandwich-and-stripes machine still used today — arrived in home kits: no mixing, minutes not hours, eventually pennies per strip. Every refinement since has been iteration: sensitivity pushed to 10 mIU/ml, digital readers (1990s–2000s) adding words, and mass production making serial testing culture economically possible.
Now: the reading problem gets solved
Lateral flow's residual weakness was never chemistry — it was interpretation at the faint margins: evaps, indents, hopeful eyes, the tweaking era.
