"Patina" gets romanticized into mist — it's actually specific chemistry: oxidation, polymerized waxes, UV shifts, handling oils and micro-wear accumulating over decades. Because it's chemistry with a time dimension, faking it convincingly is genuinely hard — fakers compress fifty years into a weekend, and compression leaves tells.

Wood: depth vs coating

Real: color change penetrates — oxidized wood is darker into the surface (visible at nicks), finishes develop fine craquelure, wax builds soft depth in recesses, sun-exposed faces fade directionally, and touch points burnish while corners stay dark. Fake: stain sits on the surface (bright wood under any scratch), uniform "aging" glaze in conveniently visible crevices, tea-brown color with no directional logic, and fresh-solvent smell. The inside-vs-outside test rules: interiors, undersides and backs must show their own honest, different aging — coherence is the whole game.

Metals: oxidation has structure

  • Silver: real tarnish grades through yellows into blue-blacks and hides in recesses where polish never reaches; decades of polishing softly rounds crisp details. Chemical "instant tarnish" is uniform gray-black everywhere.
  • Brass and bronze: genuine patina is hard, adherent, varied — greens and browns developed in layers. Acid jobs produce powdery, uniform, wipeable color and sometimes a chemical scent.
  • Iron: old rust is stable, dark and pitted; instant rust is orange, loose and even.

Ceramics and glass

Time gives porcelain fine glaze crazing (dirt settles in the crackle over years — recent crazing is clean), foot rims worn from shelf decades, and utensil-gray on used dinnerware. Fakers craze with ovens and tint with tea — suspiciously uniform, suspiciously brown. Glass earns base scratches in random directions from decades of sliding; a repro's "wear" often runs oddly parallel from a quick sanding (glass fakes love this trick).

Leather, paper, textiles

Real: gradual fade with directional sun logic, foxing spots on paper with feathered edges, handling grime concentrated where hands go. Fake: overall tea-dye tone, sharp-edged staining, uniform brittleness — aged documents and labels are a forgery genre of their own.

The examination routine

Bright raking light; magnify transitions (real patina grades, fake patina stops); check hidden-surface coherence; touch (real wax depth vs sticky glaze); smell for solvents and acids.
